Soccer Scandal
Top officials from FIFA, the international governing body of soccer, were arrested on federal corruption charges Wednesday morning at a luxury hotel in Zurich, Switzerland. The arrests came at the behest of the United States Justice Department in what The New York Times described as an “extraordinary early-morning operation.” The paper, which first reported the news citing three Swiss law enforcement sources, notes that charges against the soccer executives, some of whom were not in attendance, range from wire fraud to racketeering to money laundering. The officials will be sent to stand trial in the United States, which has an…
“Paterno Bridge”?
One Pennsylvania lawmaker believes the time is right to once again honor Joe Paterno — and do so by naming a major state bridge after the legendary Penn State coach. PennLive.com reported Friday that state Rep. Michael Regan (R) plans to introduce a bill that would christen the Pennsylvania Turnpike bridge over the Susquehanna River the “Joseph V. Paterno Memorial Bridge.” Regan has not commented directly on the bill, which has not yet (per PennLive) been “formally introduced.” But a May 21 letter looking for co-sponsors for the bill, Regan wrote that the bridge renaming would “honor the football career of…
No Appeal
New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft disagrees with the way in which NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has gone about punishing his football team for Deflategate, but Kraft’s conflict with the NFL and the commissioner are going to end there. Speaking at the NFL owners meetings in San Francisco on Tuesday, Kraft informed reporters — and NFL fans everywhere — that the Patriots will accept the penalties handed down by the NFL. The team will not appeal its punishment. “I don’t want to continue the rhetoric that has gone on for the last four months,” Kraft said. “I’m going to accept,…

Brady Suspended 4 Games
NEW YORK (AP) – The NFL suspended Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady for the first four games on Monday for his role in a scheme to deflate footballs used in the AFC title game. The league also fined the Patriots $1 million and took away two draft picks, including next years’ first-round choice. The NFL also indefinitely suspended the two equipment staffers who carried out the plan, including one who called himself “The Deflator.” The league cited the integrity of the game in handing down the punishment five days after a report said Brady “was at least generally aware” of…
Everett Golson Leaving ND
The Notre Dame quarterback competition has apparently been settled. Everett Golson has decided to transfer and spend his final season of (immediate) eligibility playing elsewhere, as first reported by ESPN.com. Just where that elsewhere will be is not known at the moment. Golson was on pace to graduate from Notre Dame this month, and as a graduate transfer, wherever he ends up, he will not have to sit out a season. And he’ll likely have plenty of suitors to choose from. While he had problems with turnovers in 2014, Golson is still a talented quarterback with plenty of experience. He’s…
