By Ralph D. Russo – ATLANTA (AP) — To add another championship to the greatest dynasty college football has ever seen, Alabama turned to its quarterback of the future, and Tua Tagovailoa proved that his time is now. The freshman quarterback, who had played mostly mop-up duty this season, came off the bench to spark a comeback and threw a 41-yard touchdown to DeVonta Smith that gave No. 4 Alabama a 26-23 overtime victory against No. 3 Georgia on Monday night for the College Football Playoff national championship. Tagovailoa entered the game at halftime, replacing a struggling Jalen Hurts, and…

She said the family became concerned when he didn’t arrive on his flight to Boston on Thursday, and that he was found dead at his home in La Jolla, a San Diego neighborhood, with his bags packed. By Will Brinson, CBSSports.com – In stunning news on Sunday night, Jerry Richardson announced his intentions to sell the Carolina Panthers franchise following the conclusion of the 2017 NFL season, in the wake of an NFL investigation into Richardson’s workplace behavior. The Panthers announced the news via a release on the team’s website that did not mention the investigation or any of the allegations stemming from recent reports. The full four-paragraph letter from Richardson: There has been no greater mission or purpose in my life than to have brought an NFL franchise to Charlotte. By Noah Trister – EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michael Geiger had the windmill. Now Matt Coghlin has the slide. On a long, wet, wacky day at Spartan Stadium, Coghlin’s celebration sure felt appropriate. Coghlin kicked a 34-yard field goal as time expired — some seven hours after the game began — and No. 24 Michigan State upset No. 7 Penn State 27-24 on Saturday night in a game that was delayed nearly 3 1/2 hours by severe weather in the second quarter. After making his winning kick, Coghlin ran back down the field and slid across it on his…

LOS ANGELES (AP) — From laughingstock to lift off. George Springer and the Houston Astros rocketed to the top of the baseball galaxy Wednesday night, winning the first World Series championship in franchise history by romping past the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 in Game 7. Playing for a city still recovering from Hurricane Harvey, and wearing an H Strong logo on their jerseys, the Astros brought home the prize that had eluded them since they started out in 1962 as the Colt .45s. “I always believed that we could make it,” All-Star slugger Jose Altuve said. “We did this for…

By Ralph D. Russo – STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Saquon Barkley and Trace McSorley cut through Michigan’s stingy defense, each scoring three touchdowns, and No. 2 Penn State emphatically avenged its last regular-season loss with a 42-13 victory against the 19th-ranked Wolverines on Saturday night. Barkley set the tone the first time he touched the ball. He took a direct snap on the second play of the game and blazed 69 yards for a touchdown on his way to 161 yards from scrimmage that are a nice addition to his Heisman Trophy bid. McSorley ran for three scores for…

By Matt Norlander – (CBS Sports) – The Big Ten announced that men’s basketball will go to a 20-game schedule beginning in 2018-19. The vote was made official by the conference’s administrators council and was revealed in advance of its league media day at Madison Square Garden. The Big Ten will be the first conference to play 20 conference games in the history of Division I basketball, a season earlier than the ACC, which will play 20 league games in 2018-19. We might only be halfway to more leagues doing the same as coaches in the SEC and Pac-12. Their…
