No Names on PSU Football Jerseys
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; July 16, 2015 – The Penn State football program announced that it will remove the names from the backs of its jerseys beginning this season. Additionally, the program announced it would unveil and distribute its 2015 poster at various locations in State College on Thursday, July 16 from 6:45-7:45 p.m. The decision to remove the names from the jerseys was made to pay homage to the history of Penn State football and return to the tradition that represented Penn State for 125 years. MacPhail to Become President After Season
Monday Phillies ownership partner John Middleton and president Pat Gillick introduced Andy MacPhail at a news conference. MacPhail will succeed Gillick as club president after the season. In the meantime, he will be a special assistant to Gillick. See more from Todd Zolecki at MLB.com
Bo Ryan Retiring After the Season
Monday’s major news in college hoops is simply this: Bo Ryan is likely entering his final season as Wisconsin’s coach. Ryan released a statement that revealed he openly debated retiring this past spring, but after discussions with his athletic director, he took some time to think it over. He’s opting for one more season on the bench in Madison, and after that, his hope is that the program will do what Syracuse just formally announced: name a current assistant as its coach-in-waiting. That coach would be Greg Gard, Ryan’s longtime assistant. See Ryan’s statement here.
Phillies Sandberg Resigns
Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg has resigned from his post, the club announced Friday. Sandberg, 55, ended up taking over as Phillies manager when Charlie Manuel stepped down in August of 2013 and was then named full-time manager before the season concluded. In parts of three seasons and 278 games as skipper, Sandberg has a 119-159 record. “It’s not an easy decision,” Sandberg said. “In a lot of ways I’m old school and I’m very much dissatisfied with the record and not please at all with that. New Evidence Rose Bet as a Player
As recently as April 23 of this year, Pete Rose denied that he ever bet on baseball as a player. However, a report by ESPN’s Outside The Lines offers evidence that Rose, who for years denied betting on baseball as a manager before finally admitting as much, did indeed bet on games in which he played. As for that evidence, OTL has obtained documents that reportedly show Rose’s betting on games during his playing days with the Reds, specifically in 1986, when he served as player-manager. Chambers Announces Geno Thorpe’s Leaving
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (June 11, 2015) – Patrick Chambers, head coach of the Penn State men’s basketball team, announced Thursday that Geno Thorpe, a sophomore guard from Pittsburgh, would not return to the Nittany Lions next season. “We thank Geno for his two years at Penn State and wish him well,” Chambers said. Thorpe saw action in 66 games during his two seasons with Penn State, averaging 6.0 points and 2.1 rebounds.
Big Ten Gives PSU 2014-15 Bowl Money
PSU.edu – During a review of bowl games and revenues, the Big Ten Council of Presidents and Chancellors decided today (June 7) to provide a full share of the 2014-15 Big Ten football bowl revenues to Penn State, providing the Nittany Lions with approximately $4.5 million in unanticipated funds. Penn State defeated Boston College in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl in December. “I am obviously very pleased to report that the council agreed to provide us with our full share of the bowl revenue,” said Penn State President Eric Barron, who attended the meeting in Chicago. “This money is used…
Newton 5-Years $103.8 Million
Cam Newton and the Panthers agreed on a five-year extension that will keep the quarterback in Carolina through 2020. It will also make him a very rich man. CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reports the deal is worth $103.8 million in total money, with $67.6 million of that contract being fully guaranteed in the first three years of the deal.
