Court Says No to $5000 for College Players

CBS – In a significant opinion from the Ed O’Bannon case, the US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court’s decision that NCAA rules restricting payment to college athletes violate antitrust laws, but determined a federal judge erroneously allowed players to be paid up to $5,000 per year in deferred compensation. “The NCAA is not above the antitrust laws, and courts cannot and must not shy away from requiring the NCAA to play by the Sherman Act’s rules,” the three-person panel wrote. “In this case, the NCAA’s rules have been more restrictive than necessary to maintain its…

Hall of Fame catcher and New York Yankees legend Yogi Berra died Tuesday at age 90, the Yogi Berra Museum announced and the Yankees and MLB confirmed. Berra’s family released a statement through the museum, saying that while they were mourning “our father, grandfather and great-grandfather, we know he is at peace with Mom. Report: Rutgers Coach Kyle Flood Suspended 3 Games — Kyle Flood has been suspended for three games as Rutgers footballcoach and fined $50,000 following a university-led investigation into rules violations and amid a recent string of off-field transgressions involving players on his team, university president Robert Barchi told NJ Advance Media. Ruben Amaro…….Gone. – The Phillies announced today that the club has elected not to extend the contract of senior vice president and general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. The team has named assistant GM Scott Proefrock as interim GM effective immediately. Amaro, 50, was named to his current position in November 2008 after serving as assistant GM for 10 years. Amaro became part of the Phillies organization as a batboy from 1980-83.
