By Ralph D. Russo – ATLANTA (AP) — To add another championship to the greatest dynasty college football has ever seen, Alabama turned to its quarterback of the future, and Tua Tagovailoa proved that his time is now. The freshman quarterback, who had played mostly mop-up duty this season, came off the bench to spark a comeback and threw a 41-yard touchdown to DeVonta Smith that gave No. 4 Alabama a 26-23 overtime victory against No. 3 Georgia on Monday night for the College Football Playoff national championship. Tagovailoa entered the game at halftime, replacing a struggling Jalen Hurts, and…

By Noah Trister – EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michael Geiger had the windmill. Now Matt Coghlin has the slide. On a long, wet, wacky day at Spartan Stadium, Coghlin’s celebration sure felt appropriate. Coghlin kicked a 34-yard field goal as time expired — some seven hours after the game began — and No. 24 Michigan State upset No. 7 Penn State 27-24 on Saturday night in a game that was delayed nearly 3 1/2 hours by severe weather in the second quarter. After making his winning kick, Coghlin ran back down the field and slid across it on his…

LOS ANGELES (AP) — From laughingstock to lift off. George Springer and the Houston Astros rocketed to the top of the baseball galaxy Wednesday night, winning the first World Series championship in franchise history by romping past the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 in Game 7. Playing for a city still recovering from Hurricane Harvey, and wearing an H Strong logo on their jerseys, the Astros brought home the prize that had eluded them since they started out in 1962 as the Colt .45s. “I always believed that we could make it,” All-Star slugger Jose Altuve said. “We did this for…

By Travis Johnson – STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — All week, the usually unflappable Trace McSorley told himself, if he could settle his feet down, his arm would follow suit. A week after Penn State’s quarterback played his most uneven game in a while, bouncing on his toes and firing over his teammates heads, he had one of his best under Beaver Stadium’s bright lights. McSorley threw a stadium-record 85-yard touchdown pass to Saquon Barkley for one of his four scoring strikes and also ran for a touchdown in No. 5 Penn State’s 56-0 victory over Georgia State 56-0. “That…

By Barry Wilner – KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chris Boswell’s pinpoint right leg and Le’Veon Bell’s two dancing feet. They do call it football, after all. Indeed, Bell spent much of Sunday watching the film “Happy Feet.” “I wasn’t nervous about the game,” Bell said. “I don’t watch ESPN or NFL Live, because I know they’ll talk about the game. I don’t necessarily want to think about the game. “I watch stuff like ‘Happy Feet.’” Who needs to reach the end zone when you have Bell chewing up yards and the clock, and Boswell setting an NFL playoff record…

By Ralph D. Russo – TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – Deshaun Watson took the snap, rolled right and with one of the easiest throws he had to make all night, completed Clemson’s journey to the top of college football. A frantic fourth quarter and a championship rematch between Clemson and Alabama was decided with 1 second left on a 2-yard touchdown toss to Hunter Renfrow. “I couldn’t hear the crowd,” Watson said. “I just felt at peace.” Watson and the Tigers dethroned the defending champs and became the first team to beat Nick Saban’s Alabama dynasty in a national title game,…

By Craig Beacham – PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — After 98 combined points and 1,040 yards of spectacular offensive play, the highest-scoring Rose Bowl in history rested on the left foot of a Southern California kicker who had already missed two field goals. Matt Boermeester somehow blocked out the cacophonous tension in the chilly air. He focused only on securing a perfect ending to an epic evening. “Game was on the line, but you’ve got to keep true to your technique and trust it,” Boermeester said. His technique was sound. His kick was true. And the Trojans got their storybook finish…

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Dennis Green, a trailblazing coach who led a Minnesota Vikings renaissance in the 1990s before a less successful run with the Arizona Cardinals, has died. He was 67. Green’s family posted a message on the Cardinals website on Friday announcing the death. “His family was by his side and he fought hard,” the statement read. Other details were not immediately disclosed, though the Cardinals said Green had died of a heart attack.
